BIOGRAPHIE :
Fille de pasteur, Joanna Boniface
Winnifrith voit le jour le 2 janvier 1913, dans le petit village d’Igtham dans
le Kent, en Angleterre. Au début des années trente, et avec la bénédiction de
ses parents, la jeune fille suit des cours d’art dramatique au Royal Albert
Hall de Londres.
Dès 1932, sous le nom d’Anna Lee,
elle apparaît dans plusieurs productions anglaises sans grand intérêt. Elle
joue son premier rôle important en 1935, dans «Le locataire du troisième sur la
cour» aux côtés de Conrad
Veidt. Mariée depuis 1934, au metteur en scène Robert
Stevenson (ils divorceront en 1944), Anna est la star feminine de plusieurs
de ses réalisations, dont l’une des meilleures adaptations du roman de H.
Rider Haggard : «Les mines du roi Salomon» (1937) avec Paul
Robeson. Le couple s’intalle aux Etats-Unis en 1939.
Anna Lee interprète plusieurs
seconds rôles dans de grandes productions américaines, donnant ainsi la
réplique aux plus grandes vedettes des années quarante. Citons : «La
maison des sept péchés» (1940) de Tay
Garnett, «Qu’elle était verte ma vallée» (1941) première collaboration avec
John
Ford, «Les bourreaux meurent aussi» (1943) de Fritz
Lang et «Obsession» de Julien
Duvivier. Dans les années cinquante, cantonnée dans des rôles de
composition, Anna entame une carrière télévisée prolifique qui durera jusqu’à
la fin de sa vie. Elle apparaît aussi dans plusieurs grands films de John Ford
et s’éloigne des plateaux en 1968, après une brève participation à la super
production de Robert
Wise «Star !» avec Julie
Andrews.
En 1970, Anna devient la septième
épouse du romancier Robert
Nathan et reste toujours très active à la télévision. Elle interprète à
partir de 1978, Lila Quatermaine dans la célèbre série «General Hospital». En
1982, elle est nommée Membre de l’Empire Britannique par la reine Elizabeth II.
Après la mort de Nathan en 1985, Anna revient au cinéma pour quelques rôles
secondaires. Paralysée suite à un accident de voiture, elle poursuit malgré
tout sa carrière en fauteuil roulant.
Anna Lee s’éteint à Beverly Hills
(Californie) le 14 mai 2004, de complications lors d’une pneumonie. La semaine
suivante, c’est son fils, l’acteur Jeffrey
Byron, qui recevra, pour elle, un Emmy pour l’ensemble de sa carrière.
